Refiguring is an ongoing choreographic research project initiated by Ning Wang. It is also her latest group dance work. The title responds to the word figure, referencing fixed images and bodily forms, and proposes instead a reconfiguration of representational norms—an exploration of bodily reconfiguration, transformation, and continuous becoming.
The project centers around two main conceptual threads. First, it reflects on the “male gaze,” examining how the female body has been viewed, objectified, and aestheticized in art history and media. It raises the question: how can the dancer, as a live performer, resist or escape this embedded visual regime? Second, it proposes a speculative bodily imagination through the idea of becoming a monster, drawing on mythological figures such as Chimera, Tiamat, and Medusa. These hybrid and wild bodies offer an entry point for exploring the suppressed, exiled, and unruly forces within the female body.
Current phases of the project unfold through improvisational movement experiments, video reflections, and verbal articulation. Together with her collaborators, Ning seeks to open up a field of bodily potential that crosses disciplinary boundaries and challenges normative systems of order and classification.
