ning wang

Dérive à NangangXizhi takes choreographer Ning Wang’s birthplace and longtime residence—the Nangang and Xizhi districts of Taipei—as the point of departure. Abandoning habitual postures of walking, Ning uses improvisational movement to reconnect with familiar cityscapes. The body becomes a perceptual instrument, drifting through alleyways, subtly intervening in and unsettling the spatial logic and atmosphere of everyday urban life.
The work draws inspiration from Théorie de la dérive, proposed by French philosopher Guy Debord in 1956, which emphasizes wandering without predetermined routes in order to activate heightened awareness within the urban environment. Through this lens, Ning opens up new dimensions of experience in seemingly mundane spaces, seeking alternative connections with the city.
Dérive à NangangXizhi is not only an improvisational physical intervention, but also a proposition for perceiving and thinking about the city differently. Through live interaction between body and space, the work invites audiences to rediscover the strangeness and agency embedded within everyday urban terrains.
